Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my mail and packages?

Your unit/box numbers are located on the yellow packets you received on your first day.  Your whole district has the same unit/box number.

You might want to let your family and friends know your unit/box number as soon as possible because this will speed up receiving your mail. You should also tell your friends and family to use your full given name and not nicknames when addressing your mail/packages because that is the only way we can find you on the computer.

District leaders will pick up the mail from the assigned mailbox and distribute mail to the entire district during lunch and dinner times.

Please do not go to the information desk for packages.

When does mail arrive?

The Mail Room receives mail from the United States Postal Service (USPS), FedEx, and the United Parcel Service (UPS) in the mornings.  We receive local deliveries from along the Wasatch Front in the afternoons between 2:00 - 4:00 pm.  Letters and packages are immediately processed and sorted as soon as they arrive.

How will I know if I have received a package?

You will receive a colored slip in your mailbox notifying you when your receive a package. You MUST bring this colored slip with you to pick up your package because it is the only way we can match you with your package. Everyone must pick up their own packages.

What happens to packages sent to me without a unit/box number?

Letters and packages which do not have Unit/Box numbers will be searched on our computers and put into the correct box. This is why it is important for your family and friends to use your full given name when sending you letters and packages.

What if I haven’t received a package I am expecting?

If someone has sent you something which hasn’t arrived, please know that as soon as we get it we will write up a colored package slip for you and put it in your mail box. Your District Leader will then give you that package slip and you bring it to the Mail Room window and we’ll get it for you.  If you get an email from Amazon or another carrier saying something has been delivered here, you can’t always believe it and it may not actually be in the Mail Room yet. There are several ways mail comes to the MTC and packages are often scanned at different locations in the valley by many carriers BEFORE making it to the MTC Mail Room.  Amazon is the worst with this!  Please know that as soon as something is received for you IN the Mail Room we will write up a package slip for it and put it in your mail box.  If something is small enough to fit in your mail box we will put it directly in there. This includes Mission T-Shirts you may have ordered from the Copy Center. If you ordered more than one we will write up a package slip for them.

If you are expecting a letter or package which does not come by the time you depart from the MTC, the letter or package will be forwarded to your mission IF your are serving in the United States. If the package was sent from the United States and your are serving in a foreign mission, the letter or package will be returned to the sender since it won’t have enough postage to reach your mission. If you are from outside of the United States and are serving outside the United States, the letter or package will be sent to your mission.

Can I buy stamps at the Mail Room?

Unfortunately not. Stamps are sold at the MTC Store.  However, we are able to meter your letters/cards. Metering means the postage is imprinted right onto the envelope and it is currently cheaper than an actual stamp.  Please be aware when using the Mail Room to mail/send letters or packages, payments under $5.00 must be paid in cash or with your MTC blue card. We can accept credit & debit cards for purchases of $5.00 and above.

Can the Mail Room help me send a package?

Yes, we can help you send packages within the United States via UPS or USPS mail. Currently, however, we are unable to send packages/large envelopes to foreign countries.  We CAN meter letters to foreign countries though. Also, we do not offer an outgoing overnight or expediated mailing services.

We have boxes, tape and packing materials here to assist you in sending boxes and those are free of charge. Often it’s cheaper to send things in padded envelopes and those can be purchased in The MTC Store. We will tell you if that is the case with what you are mailing.

PLEASE BE AWARE that when you are mailing a letter/card in a regular envelope you CAN NOT have anything bulky in the envelope (like Sim Cards, necklaces, coins, candy, anything that is not flat). This is because cards and envelopes are processed at the post office in high speed equipment and it cannot process bulky items in envelopes. If these types of items are in an envelope it will jam the machine up and cause the machine to malfunction, tear open the envelope and the item is lost forever. If you are planning on sending items like this you should get a padded envelope in The MTC Store that will fit what you are sending and then bring it to the Mail Room and we’ll help you send it properly.

What should I do with my empty boxes and other shipping supplies?

We would love to take them from you and re-use them! We can reuse empty boxes for other missionaries EXCEPT for USPS Priority Mail boxes. They don’t want us to reuse those.

We can also reuse packing materials, like styrofoam peanuts or plastic bubble wrap, so don't throw those away—we would love for you to bring them to us!

What can my family and friends send me in a package?

Your family and friends can send you almost anything while your are here in the MTC. Cookies, candy, brownies, cupcakes, chips, store -jarred salsa, popcorn, etc.

However, if anything comes through the afternoon local deliveries, there are some restrictions. They CAN NOT send anything from fast food restaurants like McDonalds or other burger places; Taco Bell or other Mexican fast food; Café Rio or the like, JDawgs, Cheescake Factory, Panda Express; ANY pizza places; Subway or sandwich shops OR anything requiring refrigeration in order to remain fresh (fresh salsa, cream cheese, eclairs, etc). These items CAN NOT be accepted and will be taken out of packages containing them. This is for your health and safety. We are not allowed to call missionaries out of class for deliveries like this and we don’t know exactly when missionaries will be able to come to the Mail Room and pick up their package. Please let family and friends know about this!

What should I do with things I don't want to bring on my mission?

Please take care of sending items home well in advance of your leaving the MTC.  DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE DAY BEFORE YOU GO! You will need at least 15-20 minutes to send your boxes.

If you live locally (within a close driving distance from the MTC) bring your item(s) to the Mail Room to be sent to Post Mart, a local mailing store in Provo, at no charge.  We can help you box up your item(s). We will give you a sticker to fill out for your box, which will need the name and phone number of the person who will pick up your item(s) from Post Mart. You then need to inform that person that the the items are being sent to Post Mart. Post Mart employees will also call that person once the item(s) are ready for pick up at their store. Post Mart is located on 2279 N University Parkway in Provo and their phone number is 801-373-5900. It is located about 2 miles from the MTC in the same area as the Walmart Neighborhood Grocery store.  If the person picks up the item(s) at Post Mart within several days there is no charge for them.  If, however, it is not picked up after 3 days, Post Mart will charge a $3.00 holding fee to the person in order to pick it up.

“If you live in another state come to the Mail Room and we will help box up and ship your items.  You will need the full name and address of where you are shipping it to.  You will then have to pay for the postage, see above under “Can I buy stamps at the Mail Room for payment information.”

Can my parents send me Grubhub, Doordash, Uber Eats or other similar delivery services?

No. Security, the information desk, and the mail room do not accept these deliveries. Please tell your parents that these deliveries will not be accepted at the MTC.
