Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get my mail and packages?
Your unit/box number can be found in the yellow packet you received on your first day or in the MTC Tools App. Note that your entire district shares the same unit/box number.
To ensure timely delivery of mail and packages, it's essential to share your unit/box number, departure date, and mission name (six-letter code) with your family and friends as soon as possible. Make sure they use your full given name (no nicknames) when addressing mail or packages, as this is how you are located in the MTC system. Incorrect or missing details can delay your package. Have them use the following format:
Elder Sample M. Sam
10-28 | PHL-LEG
2005 N. 900 East, Unit #18
Provo, UT 84602
United States
District leaders are responsible for picking up mail (not packages) from the assigned mailbox and distributing it to the district during lunch and dinner times.
Please do not visit the information desk for package pickups unless specifically instructed.
When does mail arrive?
The Mail Room receives deliveries from USPS, FedEx, and UPS in the mornings and throughout the day. We also receive local deliveries along the Wasatch Front from various vendors throughout the day. Once letters and packages arrive, they are processed and sorted, which typically takes a couple of hours.
If your family or friends receive a notification that their package (from Amazon, Crumbl Cookie, Provo Bakeries, etc.) has been delivered to the MTC, please do not come to the Mail Room right away expecting to pick it up immediately. We need time to process and log the items into our system. Once your package is ready, we will send you an email with instructions for pickup.
How will I know if I have received a package?
You will receive an email notification in your inbox when a package arrives for you. The email will include instructions on how to pick it up and any necessary steps to follow. Please note that everyone is required to pick up their own packages—you cannot pick up a package for someone else, even if they are sick.
What happens to packages sent to me without a unit/box number?
Letters and packages missing a unit/box number or departure date will be manually searched in our system and placed in the correct box. This process can take a significant amount of time, so please remind your family and friends to include your full name, unit/box number, and departure date when sending mail or packages. This will help ensure timely delivery and avoid delays in receiving your items.
What if I haven’t received a package I am expecting?
If you’re expecting a package that hasn’t arrived, please keep in mind that all letters and packages are processed, sorted, and logged into our system as soon as we receive them. If you receive a delivery notification from Amazon or another carrier, it doesn’t always mean the package is in the Mail Room yet. Many packages are first delivered to the BYU Mail Room, then brought to the MTC in daily runs, which happens twice a day. Packages are often scanned at different locations in the valley by various carriers before reaching the MTC Mail Room.
If your package still hasn’t arrived after some time, come talk to us in the Mail Room, and we’ll help track it down—but only after we’ve had time to log all incoming items. Sometimes packages arrive late in the afternoon or evening, so you might not receive a notification until the following day.
Please remember not to come to the Mail Room right after a delivery notification is sent to the sender. We need time to process and log the items into our system, which can take a few hours. Once your package is ready, we will send you an email with instructions for pickup.
Note: If you’re serving in the United States and expecting a package from within the U.S., but are assigned to a foreign mission, any letter or package sent will be returned to the sender due to insufficient postage. For international missionaries serving in the U.S., packages will be sent to your mission if possible.
Can my parents send me Grubhub, Doordash, Uber Eats or other similar delivery services?
No, we do not accept deliveries from Grubhub, DoorDash, Uber Eats, or similar services. Security, the information desk, and the Mail Room are unable to accept these types of deliveries. Please inform your parents that these deliveries will not be accepted at the MTC.
Can I buy stamps at the Mail Room?
Unfortunately, stamps are not sold at the Mail Room, but they are available for purchase at the MTC Store. We can also meter your letters and cards, which means the postage is printed directly onto the envelope, and it's currently more affordable than using a traditional stamp.
Please note that for payments under $5.00 (for mail or packages), you must use cash or your MTC blue card. For payments of $5.00 and above, we accept credit cards, debit cards, and cash.
Can the Mail Room help me send a package?
Yes, we can assist you with sending packages within the United States via UPS or USPS. However, we are currently unable to send packages or large envelopes to foreign countries, and we do not offer overnight or expedited mailing services.
We provide used boxes for free, or you can purchase a new one. We also have packing tape and materials to help you with your shipment. Often, padded envelopes are a more cost-effective option, and they can be purchased at the MTC Store or the Mail Room.
Important: When sending a letter or card in a regular envelope, make sure it does not contain any bulky items (such as SIM cards, necklaces, coins, candy, or anything not flat). The post office uses high-speed machines to process letters, and bulky items can cause the machines to jam, tear open the envelope, and result in the item being lost. If you’re sending something like this, it’s best to use a padded envelope (available at the MTC Store), and bring it to the Mail Room so we can assist you with proper mailing.
What should I do with my empty boxes and other shipping supplies?
We’d be happy to take your empty boxes and other shipping supplies for reuse! We can reuse most empty boxes, except USPS Priority Mailboxes, which cannot be reused.
We also accept packing materials like Styrofoam peanuts and plastic bubble wrap. Instead of throwing them away, please bring them to us, and we’ll make sure they get used again!
What can my family and friends send me in a package?
Your family and friends can send you a variety of items while you're at the MTC, such as cookies, candy, brownies, cupcakes, chips, store-bought jarred salsa, popcorn, and more.
However, there are restrictions. They cannot send anything from fast food restaurants (like McDonald's, Taco Bell, Café Rio, JDawgs, Cheesecake Factory, Panda Express, pizza places, Subway, or sandwich shops), nor can they send items that require refrigeration to stay fresh (like fresh salsa, cream cheese, eclairs, etc.). These items will not be accepted and will be removed from packages if included.
This policy is in place for your health and safety. Since we cannot call missionaries out of class for deliveries, and we don’t know when packages will be picked up, it’s important for family and friends to follow these guidelines.
Please make sure they are aware of this!
What should I do with things I don't want to bring on my mission?
Please arrange to send items home well before your departure from the MTC. Do not wait until the day before you leave, as it will take about 20-25 minutes to send your boxes.
If you live locally (within close driving distance of the MTC), bring your items to the Mail Room, and we’ll send them to Post Mart, a local mailing store in Provo, free of charge. We’ll help you box up the items and provide a sticker for the recipient’s name, address, and phone number. You’ll need to inform the person picking up the items from Post Mart. Post Mart will also call them once the package is ready. Post Mart is located at 2279 N University Parkway in Provo, near Walmart Neighborhood Grocery (about 2 miles from the MTC). If the item is picked up within two business days, there is no charge. After two business days, Post Mart will charge a $4.00 holding fee.
If you live outside of Utah, visit the Mail Room, and we will help you package and ship your items. You’ll need the full name, address, and phone number of the recipient. Postage fees will apply; please refer to the "Can I buy stamps at the Mail Room?" section for payment information.
